The students of Bengal Institute of Technology have over the years built a sporting event which helps the students of this college to come together and celebrate Sports and sportsmanship. Aptly called ‘Blitzkrieg’, the Annual Intra-College Sports Meet is a conglomerate of all those sports that they play in the college regularly.
Blitzkrieg brings all those sports under one banner and is the ultimate sporting competition for the students of BIT. Going by the tradition of the college, Blitzkrieg is organised by a sports committee under a Sports secretary formed and selected by active students of 4th year. Blitzkrieg takes place around the months of March to May every year. It is generally a 2-3 months long event. In the past, Blitzkrieg has been hosted by many well-known sports personalities of Kolkata. The primary sports played in Blitzkrieg are-
The football tournament is played in a league format and is called BIT Premier League or BITPL. Five to six random franchises are formed along with a Faculty franchise and each franchise has one or multiple owners, a playing or non-playing manager, an icon player and brand ambassador(s). The rest of the players apart from the icon player are chosen via an auction which takes place generally in March. The auction happens with respect to points. Players are graded into A, B and C grades with a constant base point in each grades....
The cricket tournament too is played in a league format and is called BIT Big Bash. The rules and ways are almost the same as that of BITPL so they are twin events. Blitzkrieg generally begins with BIT Big Bash followed by BITPL. The auction is done in February. The franchises have the same rules and structures like that of BIT PL. The league format in cricket and football enables both non playing students to take active interest in these sports.
Table Tennis is the most looked forward to sports played in BIT as both boys and girls play TT in the common room. The tournament has Singles and Doubles. The TT Tournament runs parallel with Big Bash and BITPL.
Carom is hands down the most popular game in BIT as everyone plays it. It’s a fun event. The fixture is done in mixed groups of two. This also runs parallel with other sports.
This event includes basic 100, 200, 400 metres race, Shot-put, Disc-throw etc.
Apart from all these sports, Blitzkrieg has also initiated exclusive sports for girls like girls carom tournament, girls shot- put, tug of war etc. The athletics events are also widely participated in by the girls of BIT. Over all, Blitzkrieg has been a successful celebration of sports by the students with the help and active participation of the college faculty.
