Over the last 15 years, the Department of Biotechnology has established itself as one of the finest places for nurturing budding biotechnologists in the state because of a unique integrated approach towards education as well as research.
We at the department of Biotechnology encourage students to think out of the box besides regular curricular work. Students participate in active research work under the direct guidance of teachers in the well-equipped laboratories; many such research works have been presented and well appreciated in different symposia and conferences in the country.
Impart quality undergraduate education on biotechnology and its allied areas through advanced teachinglearning processes to create a pool of competent Biotechnologists with expertise in biological engineering with new ideas and motivation to tackle emerging problems and challenges of the 21st Century.
The department held a MoU with M/s TCG Life sciences to establish a state of art biochemical analyses lab to equip the students with current industry know how. The department also conducts on a regular basis, workshops with collaboration from reputed firms e.g. M/s BioBharti Life Sciences, SHRM etc. for advanced hands-on job training in molecular biology, recombinant DNA technology and proteomics......
The Department conducts various sponsored research projects for both B Tech (BT) students and PG Students of other Universities and Institute. Notable among them is a project funded by Ministry of Food Processing and Horticulture, Govt. of West Bengal that has just been successfully completed.
The department arranges on a regular basis, seminar/webinar where students get opportunity to interact directly with eminent scientists from CSIR laboratories and other institutes and universities as well as from foreign universities like Stanford University, Bremen University etc...
Students of the department mandatorily take up research projects under the supervision of their teachers; such project works often come up with research publications in peer reviewed journals, adding a boost to their curriculum vitae. Especially notable is the fact that scholars from other countries also come to work in research projects at our department.Because of the extensive training, our students are regularly placed in various industries like:
Many of them now hold positions in the top echelon of their respective companies not only in the country, but also abroad in UK, USA, and New Zealand etc.

Students from this department have acquired Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the university examinations. Students of the Biotechnology Department are encouraged to participate in various national level competitions; in the recent past, our students won First and Second place in the All India Competition arranged by companies like Biocon and Novozyme etc. They have already been absorbed by these companies.
The department also encourages its students to appear for competitive exams like GATE and also arranges special training for such examinations. A good number of students from the department crack the GATE exam and get fellowships every year. In the past, our students have ranked 2nd, 4th, 16th and 96th in the All India GATE Ranking. Most of these students received fellowships in various Universities and Institutes in India like:
Every year, about 10% of our students get admitted to Master’s degree program in reputed foreign Universities like:
BIT has been chosen as the Nodal Centre for admission examination by the University of Bremen. The Dean of student admission from the Southern Illinois University personally visited the department to encourage our students as many of our former students proved their excellence and received teaching assignments there..
